Vince Foster (1941 - 2017) A great friend of Wimborne RFC

The President and Council of the Dorset & Wilts. RFU are sorry to record the following news from the Wimborne RFC website -

"We are very sad to report Vince' Fosters passing on Sunday evening, 11th June, after 12 years of chronic illness. Vince was a well respected core member of Wimborne RFC.
"He undertook many roles in the 70s, 80s and 90s and will be remembered as one of life's real characters. Vincent will be very sadly missed. Our thoughts and condolences are with Vince's family at this time.
"Vince's funeral will be on Tuesday 27th June at 12.30pm, at Poole Crematorium followed by a Wake at The White Hart in Wimborne.  Please come along, if you are able, to remember Vince and to raise a glass to his memory."
Former RFU President, Willie Wildash, adds:
- Vince was an elected Club Representative on the D & W RFU Council for several years in the late seventies. He regularly attended D & W RFU AGMs and always made a verbal contribution.
- He was Fixture Secretary for Wimborne and arranged challenging fixtures for the Club, which helped its development on the field. He also served as Club Secretary.

- When refereeing Wimborne I always looked forward to hearing his vocal advice from the touchline! He was an expert in the offside law except when Alan Morgan, Wimborne's excellent open side wing forward, was involved. A great rugby character.

National u20s Championship Final @ Moseley RFC

Cheshire 29 v 20 Dorset & Wilts.

The Twin Counties youngsters came up against a well-drilled Cheshire side, which possessed the strongest front five forwards that the Dorset & Wilts u20s had found themselves up against in this season’s competition.

Dorset & Wilts made the worst possible start, conceding a try almost directly from the kick off and receiving the ball.  An attempted clearance kick was charged down, with Cheshire fly half Josh Morris reacting quickest, pouncing on the loose ball to touch down for a try and then slot the conversion to put his team into a seven points to nil lead.  A few minutes later, and before Dorset & Wilts had mounted a significant attack, Morris converted a penalty to add another three points to his team’s tally.

Dorset & Wilts managed to win some useful possession and pressured Cheshire into mistakes, with centre Rhodri Hopkins opening the Twin Counties account with two successful penalty kicks.

Although the Dorset &Wilts team had the edge in the lineout, the Cheshire pack now had their Dorset & Wilts counterparts under pressure in the set scrum; and, following a series of plays, Cheshire crossed again for their second try, with Morris again converting.

Then three minutes before the break, Dorset & Wilts scrum half Ciaran Johnston broke clear and weaved his way past floundering defenders to touch down for a try; and, with Hopkins landing the conversion, the Twin Counties were very much back in the game.

Going into the second half 17 points to 13 down, the Twin Counties were soon in trouble again, defending on their own try line,  Replacement Sam Vivan was sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes, deemed responsible for deliberately killing the ball at a ruck by referee Alex Thomas.  Now a man down and desperately defending their own line, Mr Thomas penalised Dorset & Wilts. again, awarding Cheshire a penalty try that was duly converted by Morris.  In the 50th minute Cheshire scored a fourth try to make the score Cheshire 29 points to Dorset & Wilt’s 13.

The Twin Counties needed to score and went close on two occasions.  Then in the 63rd minute it was Johnston again who latched on to a loose ball and outsprinted the covering defenders to touch down, with Hopkins adding the extras.

With time running out Cheshire managed the game, penning Dorset & Wilts inside their own half with accurate kicking, and time just ran out for Dorset & Wilts.

This was far from a poor performance from a young Dorset & Wilts. team with six players still at school.  They found themselves up against a team on average about a year a man older.  If they can keep this squad of players together they will come good - this was their first defeat this season and it came in a national cup final.

The Dorset & Wilts Senior XV did not fare much better the previous day, losing their opening RFU County Championship match against Sussex at Crawley RFC by 28 points to 10.  Oliver Wilson scored a try, converted by Sam Baker who also added a penalty.

D&W U17/18’S DEVELOPMENT DAY - DETAILS RELEASED

Bath Academy are having u17s games on 21 April (Exeter) and 28 April (Bristol) before the end of season release of some players, which will provide future County u18 and u20 programmes with a very realistic player pathway to South West and England representation and the potential that can bring.  As always, players who are off to Uni can still play for us at u20 level - we currently have students from Bath, Loughborough, Hartbury, Cardiff and Brunel to name a few.

Therefore the Management and Coaching Staff have great pleasure in announcing a Development Day for the current squad players and those who may no longer be involved in Academy rugby.  The purpose of the day is to extend the development of our current squad players, alongside players who were not quite ready for County rugby.  We will focus on the development of those better players within a Club Team and those who are keen to develop their skills to a representative level.  We have therefore organised a Players Development Day to be held at Bryanston School on Sunday 23 April, 2017 for all Squad Players and unselected players who attended the Trials at Tidworth and Salisbury.  (Parents and Coaches are also welcome to attend this stunning venue).  Players will need to bring a small notebook and pen (for sessions with Physio and points from coaches).

The session will be between 9.30 am and 3.30 pm with a break for lunch at about 12.30 pm.

Timings:

9.30 am Arrival and registration

9.45 am Squad meeting and short feedback activity.

10.00-10.30 am meeting and practical examples on Injury management and individual warm up - presented by Holley Bailey– Senior Lecturer in Sports Therapy, Hartbury College

10.30am Split Backs and Forwards.
Backs - with coaches working on positional skills
Forwards - with coaches work on positional requirements at scrums and lineouts

12.30pm Lunch – PLEASE ENSURE ALL PLAYERS BRING A SUITABLE PACKED LUNCH AND DRINK

1.15pm Team Warm up (Coach lead)

1.30pm Work on the tackle and contact in small groups.

2.00pm Games for understanding

2.30 pm 6-minute rugby

2.45pm Cool down -  with Hollie Bauiley followed by review of the day

3.00pm End of day.  Players should write short action plan for their own development.

PLEASE ENSURE ALL PLAYERS BRING A SUITABLE LUNCH, PLENTY OF FLUIDS AND SNACKS FOR THE DAY.  A CHANGE OF CLOTHES IS ALSO RECOMMENDED, PARTICULARLY IF IT IS RAINING.  WE WILL HAVE A PHYSIO THERE FOR THE DAY AND SHOWERS/CHANGING ROOMS WILL ALSO BE AVAILABLE.

Our aim is to have a highly productive but fun rugby event, whilst taking another look at those players who originally trialled, alongside our selected squad, to see how they have worked on the feedback given from the assessors in previous trails. Please note that this is not with a view to add players to our existing squad (unless players are considered exceptional), but to prepare/boost confidence for players who intend to be considered in the next Trial.

COACHES, SCHOOL MASTERS, PARENTS

WE WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY PLAYER ON THE DAY WITHOUT PRIOR CONFIRMATION OF INTENDED ATTENDANCE BY EMAIL TO samsie1@talktalk.net OR IF WE DO NOT HAVE THE COMPLETED FORMS THAT WERE HANDED IN AT PREVIOUS TRIALS.

We experienced a very difficult situation at the first trial (in extreme weather conditions) when 22 players arrived unannounced and caused huge delays at registration.  We do not have the time or other resources to deal with this again.
